Teeth can endure a high amount of stress, though there are some situations where their longevity can’t be extended any further, such as:
- When a tooth has been chipped or broken during an accident,
- There is little tooth structure remaining after a large filling, or
- Root canal therapy has been performed.
In these cases, where it’s not expected that the tooth will last, we would recommend a crown to sustain the tooth’s function and life span. Crowns are also used to improve teeth aesthetically, and restore a smile to its full potential. A crown is made of porcelain or gold and acts a ‘cap’ for your natural tooth to protect and strengthen it. It is hand crafted by our highly experienced technician and attached to your natural tooth (which has been reduced in size to accommodate the crown) via a strong cement. The crown should function as your own tooth and, provided it is hygienically maintained, should last indefinitely.
